Talmud 11 - Outline of Sugyah Project  - Final Performance Task

TAL3D for Rabbi Dr. Moshe J. Yeres

*Sugyot of Perek 6 of Baba Metzia are divided into 7 groups of 3 students. Each group of students will be responsible for a particular sugyah. This assignment is worth 25% of spring semester grade.

*Students prepare material with Artscroll, CD-Daf, Steinzaltz, www.dafyomi.co.il, and other online and printed materials. e.g. www.webyeshiva.com

*Teacher will assist students by directing them to additional resources where applicable, such as Efrati’s book and will point out relevant Tosafot and commentaries. However the students are to prepare primarily the Talmud sugyah to explain it to the class.

* Prior to start of the project, class will study together in class setting the 2 first Mishnayot of Perek 6 (with Kehati) to ensure that basic premises have been covered.

* Because Talmud is a conceptual course, all presenting student groups will be assessed primarily on clarity of presentation, both oral clarity on oral teaching of Talmudic sugyah and visual clarity of written support materials.

* There wll be periodic quizzes and class assignments to assess class attentiveness and comprehension to student presented material. Students are therefore encouraged to ask questions if the presentation is not clear.

* Each student group will prepare and present their sugyah to teach it to the class. Students will have 3 days to do presentation and present supporting documents and PowerPoints. If necessary, a 4th day may be added, schedule permitting. Students will be assessed on 5 components. With the exception of #1 (below), all components are to be typed and presented to teacher on disk (as Word, html, PowerPoint etc.) besides being distributed (or shown) in class.

What you need to be sure to do and how much it’s worth

1) Students will prepare and orally present a Talmudic sugyah to class, as above. Primary goal is to explain the sugyah clearly so that the class will understand it. Focus on shakla- vetarya. Students should try as much as possible to present in Hebrew. This part will be graded on clarity of presentation to class.   = 34 points.

2) Students will submit a list of resources, both online and print resources, that they used to prepare the sugyah. Students will also submit on the same page a general outline of how they went about studying and preparing for the project.    =6 points.

3) Students will submit to class and teacher a flow-chart showing in original Aramaic/Hebrew and explaining the different layers of the sugyah (question, answer, proof, etc.)This may be done in Word or PowerPoint. (use their flow chart template)  = 20 points

4) Students must distribute to students and teacher a list of 20 basic terms and key phrases used in the sugyah and important for its understanding; and a list of 8 basic ideas from the sugyah. These should of course be explained. It is possible that there might be some overlap between the 2 lists.    = 20 points

5) PowerPoint presentation, which will accompany and supplement the Oral presentation to class. PowerPoint may be used as a summation and review of sugyah material taught. Remember that you will need to make sure to reserve the laptop and computer projector from the library.   = 20 points

* Remember to submit material in disk or email format. When student material is submitted to me by email, I always respond with a message that I received it. That is your receipt that I have received the file. If you do not receive a response from, it is usually a good sign that your email transmission did not reach me. Please correspond with ravtalmud@pathcom.com .

*Each presentation will be followed by a short quiz on material of group.
